Title: reiserfs: fixing a Replay Failure Subject: system would not boot until I ran reiserfsck Key wrods: reiserfs Replay Failure, unable to mount Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root I have been running on SuSE7.3 for years (on 2.4.10-4GB kernel with reiserfs 2.6.x), and reiserfs has been wonderful. I have lost power many times, and reiserfs has acted like a good journaling file system, starting up clean every time, until yesterday. Yesterday, the power was removed, and the system 'kernel panic' on boot, because of a "REPLAY FAILURE", which was fixed by running reiserfsck Undompressing............................................done. Trying to replay onto a log block Replay Failure, unable to mount reiserfs_read_super: unable to initialize journal space Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:0c ############################# FIX ############################# Downloaded the bbc version 1.2 from http://lnx-bbc.org/ I booted on the bbc and ran fdisk /dev/hda, and hit 'p' to print the partition table Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 39 3876 29015280 5 Extended /dev/hda2 4 38 264600 82 Linux swap /dev/hda5 39 331 2215048+ 8e Linux LVM /dev/hda6 332 401 529168+ 8e Linux LVM /dev/hda7 402 551 1133968+ 8e Linux LVM /dev/hda8 552 2001 10961968+ 8e Linux LVM /dev/hda9 2002 3001 7559968+ 8e Linux LVM /dev/hda10 3002 3004 22648+ 83 Linux /dev/hda11 3005 3039 264568+ 82 Linux swap /dev/hda12 3040 3876 6327688+ 83 Linux The bbc mounted hda10 ( my /boot partition ) but none of the others. By default the bbc does not load the resierfs or lvm modules, so I did insmod reiserfs insmod lvm From this output I had to gues that /dev/hda12 is the location of the journal. The hda 5 through 9 are extenctions of the JFS on 12. So I ran the reiserfs fsck ( called reiserfsck ). reiserfsck /dev/hda12 It finished and said that everything was clean, and no errors found. I rebooted the system, after removing the bbc, and the system came up. # # I mailed $25.00 to Namesys for being cool # 6114 La Salle ave., #405 # Oakland, CA 94611 USA # And I got a responce from Hans Reiser # just for being cool
